Welcome To The Ledger
There is usually more behind a capital decision than the answer a business owner receives. The Ledger is where we examine what happens before that answer is made.
Small business lending is full of information that rarely reaches the business owner in the same form it reaches the lender.
Revenue means something. Cash flow means something else. Credit can matter without being the entire decision. A profitable business can still present risk. A growing business can apply at the wrong time. And sometimes the information submitted simply does not tell the same story the owner believes the business is telling.
I have spent years on both sides of that conversation.
What continues to stand out is how often business owners are asked to make capital decisions without knowing how their business will actually be evaluated.
That is the space Think Like The Lender was created to address.
And The Ledger is where I will go deeper.
Here I’ll write about the decisions, data, infrastructure, and lender logic shaping small business capital. Some articles will begin with something happening inside the industry. Others will come from patterns I have seen in real lending situations. And sometimes I will challenge assumptions that have become so common that no one stops to ask whether they are actually true.
The goal is simple: give business owners a clearer understanding of the decision before they enter it.
Because the application is rarely the beginning of the decision.
The condition of the business, the quality of the information, the timing of the request, the existing obligations, and the way all of those pieces fit together are already telling a story.
Lenders are going to read that story.
Business owners should be able to read it too.
